Essential Oils for Natural Black Skin, Hair and Body Care

So, what exactly is an essential oil? According to the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, an essential oil is “a volatile oil, usually having the characteristic odor or flavor of the plant from which it is obtained, used to make perfumes and flavorings.” Basically, they are natural oils found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. It’s the stuff that makes a rose smell like a rose, and a mint leaf smell minty and cool.

Although volatile in nature, essential oils can assist you with some of your most pressing challenges. With hair, they can help to stimulate growth, soothe an itchy scalp and rid your scalp of bacteria and fungus.

Your skin can benefit from the use of essential oils as they assist in the treatment of acne, help with dry, irritated and sensitive skin as well. Essential oils in a good body butter will help moisturize and soften your skin

How To Use: One of the main things to remember is that all essential oils are to be diluted with carrier oils.

Carrier oils are jojoba, coconut, grape seed, apricot and olive oil. Shea butter is also a carrier agent. You only need 1-2 drops per oil, depending on the size of any given product you're creating.

It's best to work on a glass surface, so a cutting board (yes they have them made of frosted glass) an old window pane or a piece of glass cut to fit your work surface is best. You must keep your work area clean. Warm to hot soapy water with a little Clorox works well.

Have separate blending containers, measuring cups, spoons and pipettes for essential oil use only. If you're one of the lucky ones, a room would be the perfect work space. Otherwise, set aside an area in a room that is well lit, yet not enough to bring extreme heat to your work area and treat this space as if it's a workroom.

Store your essential oils in a cool dry place and never leave the tops off.

Their use is not meant to replace traditional medicine or professional services.
