Beautiful black skin. Is it different? Indeed it is and it's high time you started thinking about your skin differently.
There are those who will tell you that all skin is the same. When it comes to caring for your skin as black women, there are things that you have to take into consideration.
Not only do you have to consider the type of skin that you have, meaning, oily, dry, normal, or combination, your melanin has to be part of the equation.
Science will say that you can't exist on the planet unless you have melanin. Let's say this statement is true. Yet, because you have more melanin, your skin is to be cared for differently.
Yes you should. The way you care for your skin should be different. The product you use on your skin will be different. And why is this so? Because not only are you caring for your skin, you're also caring for the melanin component in your skin.
Melanated skin will scar differently, bruise differently and even have a different appearance.
Your cleanser should be formulated so that your skin is not stripped of its natural oils. Even if it's oily, the ingredients should be such that it minimizes the oil, instead of stripping all of the oil. This will cause your skin to be dry.
Oftentimes, we’ll use the wrong formulated product and in doing so this creates more challenges for our skin.
The dull, gray, ashy skin that we often see reflecting back at us in the mirror, can be the result of dead skin cell buildup. When you have this challenge, a simple and gentle exfoliation process can help remove the buildup.
When you consider products to exfoliate your skin, more often than not you have a tendency to look for something that's going to be scrubbing your face. I'm referencing scrubbing as in scrub pads, harsh nut scrubs.
This doesn't have to be the case. There are products like jojoba wax beads, that will do a very good job of removing dead skin cells from your face without the risk of scratching or scaring.
Did you also know that there are masks that will serve the purpose as a way to remove dead skin cells? Something as gentle as honey will remove a surface layer of dead skin cell buildup. Coupled with Wild Oats, it takes the honey to another layer and its ability to lift dead skin cells from your face.
With oily skin, clay masks can act as a way to remove dead skin cells build up. If you notice, with the clay mask they are drawing and absorbing the excess oil from your face. After removing the mask from your face, you will notice that the beauty is there but the shine is less.
Thinking about your skin differently is key to maintaining and enhancing its beauty. When considering products that you’ve seen in a commercial or ad, study it well. The results you see being shown, whether it's television, in a magazine or online for that matter may not be the results you get.
When you realize and understand that not only are you caring for your skin or condition, you are taking care of the melanin. It makes a difference in your approach to caring for your skin. Melanin is what gives you the complexion that you've been so blessed to have.
Your melanin is why your skin is always looking as if it’s been kissed by the sun. Thinking differently enables you to understand that you’re caring for something that no one else has. When you do so, your regimen will change, and so will the love and appearance of your skin.
