Minimizing Dark Spots and Uneven Skin Tones In African American Skin
It would be nice to go back in time and bring back the unblemished and soft skin from childhood into adulthood. However, seeing that this is unlikely, our time would be better spent figuring out new ways to repair and restore uneven skin since the damage has already been done. Because hyperpigmentation extends beyond the epidermis (top layer) into the dermis (inner layers) of your skin, repairing and restoring darker skin can almost be a chore or labor of love, depending on your perspective.
The first step to minimizing the appearance of dark spots. and uneven skin tone is a proper diagnosis. Is the cause of your dark spots hormonal, physical, or environmental?
Knowing this should and will impact the steps you take to improve your skin’s appearance.
Although, many options are available to help minimize the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin from lightening creams available by prescription to microdermabrasion and laser treatment, not all of us can afford certain treatments and not every treatment works for everyone.
There are, however, two solutions that will work for everyone without exposure to unnecessary risks: Internal and Topical. What you are putting into your body and what you apply directly to your skin. Proper nutrition and lifestyle are the most important factors in determining the health of your skin and minimizing the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Food and Healthy Glowing Skin
Nature is wonderful; everything you need for beautiful skin is at your disposal. In fact, many medications mimic or are synthesized from certain properties or plants while beauty products often contain derivatives of or plant materials in small quantities. Besides, everything you eat for your skin can also be turned into products for your skin such as toners, masks, or facial scrubs.
Beta Carotene (will convert into Vitamin A in the body) is considered an antioxidant important for the development of skin cells and promotes a healthy skin tone. Sweet potatoes, spinach, papaya, pumpkin, kale, and carrots are all good sources of beta carotene. Sweet potato, from a testimonial, when eaten frequently during a break out helps to heal acne faster while limiting the impact and longevity of acne scars.
Cocoa (pure and powdered form) contains antioxidants that help repair your skin.
Omega-3 fatty acid promotes healthy skin and can also act as a preventative measure for skin inflammation and problems such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis, which can also lead to hyperpigmentation. Walnuts, chia and hemp seeds, flaxseeds and their oils are all a good source of Omega-3.
Vitamin C contains antioxidants that help protect your skin from potential damage from sun exposure. It also helps increase collagen production and treats hyperpigmentation, fading dark spots and acne scars. Red bell pepper (contains more vitamin C than oranges), kale, citrus fruits, strawberries, sweet potatoes and papaya are just some sources of Vitamin C.
Vitamin E will not only keep your cells healthy but it encourages healthy skin growth. Vitamin E can be obtained from avocados (which also have also been shown to help balance hormones in women if eaten daily), nuts such as almonds, pine, hazelnuts, and peanuts and vegetable oils such as sunflower and wheatgerm. The latter contains the most vitamin E per serving.
Zinc will help repair skin damage. Sources of zinc include nuts, seeds, beans and whole grains.
Avoiding processed sugar, food or drinks which decrease the overall health of your body and thus skin is necessary. So is drinking water, which hydrates your skin by keeping cells healthy and happy by flushing your body of any toxins that can potentially clog your system and slow down the healing of your skin.
Natural Applications for Glowing Skin
100% Pure Shea Butter is high in Vitamins A, E, and F (Vitamin F is composed of Omega 3 & 6) while Cocoa Butter has high levels of Vitamin E.
Aloe Vera plants are worth the investment. They are inexpensive to buy, grow quickly, and contain high amounts of minerals, amino and fatty acids, and vitamins such as A, C, and E, all of which are necessary if you want glowing skin.
Essential Oils* such as rose, lavender, frankincense and geranium will enhance your journey to healthy and glowing skin by helping to regenerate new cells, heal damaged skin, fade spots and improve the overall appearance of your skin.
Oatmeal also contains Zinc and Vitamin E. Steel cut or regular oats ground and mixed with warm water will help exfoliate your skin to remove dead cells. Oatmeal also assists in lightening your skin and calming irritations that promote damage.
Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar and Lemon are both known to help in evening out your skin tone and fading spots due to sun damage or acne, for example. *Essential oils are best added to a carrier oil before applying them to your skin. A little lavender and Shea butter works wonders.
What you do for your skin goes hand in hand with what you eat for the health of your skin.
It is important to discover what works best for you and give your tailored treatment a fair time to work. Even dermatological treatments such as lightening creams or microdermabrasion take time and aren’t always the most effective or healthy methods to minimize dark spots. For the long-term it is best to make lifestyle changes.
The top layers of your skin are all old cells and because skin grows every day, you will have completely different skin within a month’s time. Skin is very resilient, and a beautiful complexion free from dark spots is possible. All you have to do is understand the science of your skin and what it needs to blossom.
That’s it for this week. As always …
