What's your greatest skin care challenge?
As women and a growing number of men of color, what's your greatest skin care challenge? Whether it's dark spots, uneven skin tone, dark circles, puffiness under your eyes or hair that won't grow, you'll find a product that can possibly become the solution to your challenge.
Moisturizers and ingredients that hydrate your skin will always be your best friend, for your face, body and hair. So look for products with nourishing and nurturing ingredients. Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter and jojoba oils are a few of the ingredients to keep on your list.
We've got new additions to our store for you. Essential oils have been known to help calm and soothe skin and scalp irritations. Although you'll find a sample kit on the hair category page, you can use them for any of your skin and hair care needs.
The hair care sample kit has been given an upgrade. We've increased the size of the container on the shampoo and conditioners and added a hair butter sample to the mix.
Although there's beauty in your blackness, your skin is sensitive and needs protection from the sun just like everyone else. So if you know you're challenged by sunburn, add a few drops of Lavender essential oil to Jojoba and Grapeseed Oil and create a nice body oil for yourself. It will bring comfort and beauty back to your skin.
We're listening to you and your suggestions, so keep an eye on the category pages and your emails for updates.

Sleeping Your Way To Beautiful Black Skin
One of the things we’ve been told and have learned from experience is that when you don’t get enough sleep, it’s like being in a car that doesn’t have enough fuel. You will run out of energy. Not getting enough sleep is a trap we fall into because of the stress we live under. The hours we have to work in terms of jobs and businesses in order to make things work for us financially, and with a hectic lifestyle, it shows up in our face and hair.
A good night's sleep is one of the most underrated beauty tools that we have at our disposal, which is why it is something that everyone should have on their list of “to do’s”. And that is to get enough rest. When the term “turn out the lights” is used, do just that. Turn 'em off!
Have you ever noticed that within the space in which you sleep there are always lights on. If you live an inner city lifestyle, the street lights are always on, which means that you don’t go into that total blackness of space where you can rest. This is crucial. The same thing applies to your clock next to your bed.
Not only is that electricity on a very low frequency interfering with how you’re resting, the light coming off the numbers is also interfering with how you’re sleeping.
What Happens When You Fall Asleep?
When you fall asleep, what happens is the body releases what’s known as a youth activating hormone called the Human Growth Hormone.
This hormone builds us up and helps create beautiful skin giving us a more youthful appearance overall. It also provides us with stronger bones, increased muscle mass and it’s also a part of normal tissue repair, which helps to regenerate what’s been broken down by the daily activities that we subject your body to.
If there were a formula that you could follow in order to get your rest, it would be to try to be in bed by 10 pm. While there are things that can present themselves as challenges (children, work, etc…), it’s just a starting point, and you can set your parameters around it. However, if you just set a time and not take in any type of caffeine after 3 pm (soda, coffee, hot chocolate, some herbal teas), or do your very best not to have them at least 3 hours before you go to bed.
It’s a known fact that when you go to bed on a full stomach, your body will spend the night trying to digest the food as opposed to conserving energy for the next day. You don’t want to watch television before you go to bed either. Watching television actually stimulates the brain.
Do not consume too many fluids before you go to bed because you know this will have you breaking your rest and have you going to the bathroom 2-3 times a night, so try not to have anything to drink after 7. You want to turn off all electrical devices (including your cell phone). You want to minimize any type of interaction or what will expend energy as you begin to rest yourself.
A little spritz of lavender essential oil in water on your pillow case will help you to relax your body and mind and helps you to wind down from all the activities from the day. The last thing you might want to do is give thanks for the good life you have, no matter how challenging you feel it is. You want to relax your mind and fall asleep and enjoy the night because that rest you get is going to help you keep your skin radiant and healthy.
Remember what I said earlier: "Not getting enough sleep is a trap we fall into because of the stress we live under and it shows up in our skin and hair."
That’s it for this week! As always …
