Using Aromatherapy To Relieve Stress
I had an opportunity to talk with a group of ladies in a Women's Shelter and it was most enlightening. Why enlightening? Because with all of their challenges, they were warm and kept speaking of being grateful.
I shared tips and techniques with them about how to relieve stress using aromatherapy.
What I found were a group of women that not only understood the importance of relieving stress but they were not strangers to aromatherapy and essential oils.
Talk about an exchange of knowledge, it was one of the most energetic workshops I’ve done in a long time.
Just because these women found themselves homeless, so to speak, didn't mean that they’d lost their sense of being. They understood that their living condition was temporary and in order to work through their challenges they welcomed the sweet smell of essential oils.
We all like a great smelling scent but sometimes we "Need" a great smelling scent to take our minds and spirits away from the challenges at hand and to be able to just relax.
Essential Oils on the Go
I make it a point to travel with a small bag of essential oils that will allow me to take a whiff when I need them whether it's working through stress, re-energizing my mind or warding off negative energy.
It was like we were doing a dance, the exchange with the women was energetic. We shared book titles, oil recipes and most of all ... time.
I was asked, "what's in your bag of goodies?"
Here's what I carry:
Lavender – not only do I carry lavender for relaxing purposes but it's great for minor burns on your skin. Lavender also helps with depression, mood swings, nervousness, insomnia and balancing the mind.
Lemon, Lemongrass, Orange, Grapefruit, Tangerines - These beauties are for times when I need to be lifted up. While they can act as antiseptics or detoxify your body, citrus oils are wonderful when you need a lift. They become my cup of coffee, so to speak.
A word of caution about citrus oils, they are photosensitive and when using them in skin care products, you should not go out into the sun immediately after an application or treatment.
Rose, Geranium, Jasmine Sambac – For me on a general level, these flowers represent a basic floral essence. They cover a multitude of challenges, depression, menopause, skin care , aphrodisiacs, low self-esteem and even relief of menstrual cramps.
Sandalwood, Frankincense, Palo Santo - These are my grounding oils, my spiritual tools… the big guns.
Have you ever experienced a moment when you just couldn’t get it together and you felt like you were all over the place?
Your mind is racing, thought process can’t seem to gel? Or have you ever experienced heaviness like you couldn’t shake the weight off your shoulder?
That's when I pull out the big guns. Not only will they ground your energy but also they make a great base for perfume creations.
For this visit to the Shelter it was an introduction to aromatherapy using essential oils but on the next visit the ladies will make their own special blends.
Food for thought ...
When you think of a Women's Shelter, the connotation of a depressed group comes to mind. It ain't necessarily so! Granted, a lot of these women have serious challenges, but so do some of us not living in a shelter.
They have their children that they’re trying to hold on too, they've been through traumatic relationships but at the end of the day, they're still women, wanting to experience things that women like.
Find a shelter, donate your time and expertise and watch the smile that comes to the face of the life you’ve touched.
It will teach you to have gratitude for every thing that you have and that the "Stress" you experience could possibly be a minor discomfort, in the scheme of things.
That's it for this week. As always …
